Acupuncture, which originated in China, is a way of adjusting the body’s “life energy” (Qi or Chi) flow. Acupuncture is one of the main healing treatments within Traditional Chinese Medicine. Using tiny needles into specifically defined acupoints, either by twirling or by a gentle pumping action, in order to stimulate the flow of energy or Qi, reduce inflammation, and stop pain. Acupuncture restores the balance and circulation of the body’s energy to stimulate the body to repair and heal itself.
Chinese herbs work to bring the body’s systems back into balance so the body can heal itself, naturally. Our practitioners diagnose diseases by feeling the pulse, watching the patient’s tongue, and doing some tests. Each herbal formula is tailored for your specific condition and the underlying imbalance that is causing it. The most common ways to take Chinese herbs are in a tea, granule powder, herbal pills, or tincture. The careful adjustment of the remedy to suit the individual patient is characteristic of Chinese medicine. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal treatment are often combined and complement each other. Granules are concentrated boiled herbs. The herbal formulas are boiled down and the liquid is concentrated. Mix this powder with warm water to reconstitute the herbs. Sometimes the herbs are also encapsulated for pills.
Electro-acupuncture is used to augment the pain relieving and anti-inflammatory aspects of acupuncture. Electro-acupuncture provides additional small amount electric stimulation to the acupuncture needles. The stimulation enhances muscle relaxation, the release of natural pain killers in the body, as well as decreases inflammation. Electro-acupuncture is most often used for chronic joint and muscle pain and inflammatory conditions. The pain relief with electro-acupuncture can be so dramatic it has been used for certain types of surgery in China.
Cupping works in conjunction with acupuncture to relax muscles and increase circulation. During this therapy, glass, wooden, or plastic cups are applied to the skin. The inside of the cup is depressurized with a flame or a vacuum,
The jars are left in position for 10 to 15 minutes while the vacuum inside the cup produces strong suction on the skin and increases the blood flow and circulation.
Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy in which dried plant materials called”AI”are burned on or very near the surface of the skin. The intention is to warm and invigorate the flow if Qi in the body and dispel certain pathogenic influences.
Tui Na, or acupressure, works to balance disharmony in the body. Tui Na uses the Chinese medical massage techniques. Tui Na, combined with acupuncture, is very powerful to help the treatment have lasting results.
